The Department of Chemical Engineering possesses more than thirty teaching staff, including 15 professors and 14 associate professors. It hasacademician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, expert of topics on " ControllingCivil Water Pollution " and "Safeguarding Safe Drinking Water " advisory expert committee of the National Water Project, winner of the commemorative medallion to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, gainer of special allowances of the State Council Government, "new century excellent talents" of the Ministry of Education, holder of the national one hundred excellent doctoral papers and other outstanding talents.

The Department of Chemical Engineering has set up the major of Chemical Engineering and Technology, which began to recruit students in 1984 and established as Key Major of Hunan Province in 2005.In 2008, the major of Chemical Engineering and Technology joined the “2+2” Joint Training Program of Central South University-Monash University and Central South University-Birmingham University. In 2010, it was selected as the Excellent Engineer Training Program of the Ministry of Education. In 2016, it passed the Engineering Education Certification of the Ministry of Education and passed the duplicate certification in 2019, while selected as the national first-class undergraduate construction major.

In 2000, the Department of Chemical Engineering was authorized to grant the Doctor's Degree in Chemical Technology. In 2002, it was approved to confer the Doctor's Degree in chemical engineering and technology. In 2003, it was awarded the Chemical Engineering and Technology Postdoctoral Research Station. In 2009, it entered into top 1‰ in global ESI of Engineering Discipline.It has a national engineering practice education center, Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Water Environment and Agricultural Product Safety, Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Efficient and Clean Utilization of Manganese Resources and other teaching and research platforms.

The Department of Chemical Engineering is engaged in scientific research of green chemical industry, resource chemical industry, environment and water treatment, material chemical industry, industrial catalysis, new energy resources and other fields for the national key development fields and major development needs.It has undertaken major national science and technology projects, national natural science fund, national "863", "973"project, science and technology support, and other projects or subjects, which has more than 60 million yuan of research funds in recent years.It has won a National Second Prize for Technological Invention, a National Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress, more than 10 items of provincial and ministerial scientific research awards, and two first prizes and one second prize of Hunan Higher Education Achievements.

Teachers from the Department of Chemical Engineering led or participated in the construction of the national virtual simulation experiment center of mining and metallurgical engineering and the national chemistry teaching base of basic engineering courses, which provided key support for the college being approved as "National Advanced Collection of Education System" in 2009 and the college Party Committee being selected as "National Benchmarking College and Department of Party Construction Work" in 2018.

The Department of Chemical Engineering regards fostering virtue through education as fundamental task, fully implements the engineering education concept of "student-centered, output-oriented and continuous improvement", and adheres to cultivating senior engineering talents with "emphasis on foundation and wide caliber" in innovative chemical technology research and development, engineering design and implementation, production management. Students have won more than twenty first prizes in the National Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Design Competition, National Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Experiment Competition, National Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Safety Design Competition and other discipline competitions.In the past five years, the enrolment rate of college graduates has reached over 46%, and the primary employment rate has reached over 96%. Undergraduates spread over chemical industry, energy, materials, environment, resources, administration and other fields at home and abroad.Graduates have been awarded the Excellent Master's Thesis of Hunan Province or the Excellent Doctoral Thesis of Hunan Province for many times and have become senior executives of the world's top 50 chemical companies and well-known professors.
